Railings and handrails for your safety

Before starting a stair project there's a lot of terminology and specificalities that you need to know about. There is regulation about pretty much everything. Respecting those is important for your safety and comfort. But theres also the look you want to give to your staircase. Many materials and finishes exist for your taste. This applies to railings and handrails.

You will find everything you need to know in this article.

The difference between railings and handrails

It can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between a railing and a handrail.

These terms are often used together and it's important to distinguish them.

First, the word banister is often used to designate the railing and handrail at the same time.

However, the barrier on the side that stops people from falling is referred to as the railing. For its part, the handrail is the continuous handrest that supports and guides people along a wall. Their primary goal is to ensure safety while being suitable for everyone.

Standards with regard to railings and handrails

In terms of standards for railings and handrails, it's important to know that the standards may vary depending on the style and width of the staircase:

  •       For a normal staircase, only one handrail is required if the staircase has a width of under 110 cm.

  •       If the staircase has three or more steps, it requires a handrail. It must be easily identifiable and provide support while using the staircase. In addition, it must be installed 32-36 inches from the edge of the steps.

  •       A space for a person's hand of 2 inches is also required between the wall and the handrail.

  •       As for the railing, it must measure no less than 36 inches and cover the entire length of the staircase.

Choose the right banister

First of all, in order to make the right choice of banister, it's necessary to make sure that everything follows the standards and is safe. Then, for the choice of the model and the desired style, the chosen materials will influence everything.

First, there is stainless steel which is great both indoors and outdoors. Very resistant and easy to handle for many types of staircases.

Another option is wood. Often preferred for indoor use, wood gives a warm and sturdy style. However, wood requires a little more maintenance so as to be durable.

Finally, there's steel. This material is quite similar to stainless steel in terms of benefits, and it offers a wide variety of colours and models to create a more personalized staircase.
